Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
