Security Council representatives approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip the following week.

He was appointed provisional head of state subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that ousted the former president in the final month of 2024, ending 13 years of domestic strife.

Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions in his role as head of the Muslim faction HTS, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and to friendly nations for their support of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

After the meeting, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting does not represent his initial visit to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
