The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 people perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
