The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Formal Protests by Iran and Egypt

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced strong concerns about a planned “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Flags and Banners

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to highlight Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to create images celebrating the event.
  • Planners are committed to making sure all fans feel welcome in the city throughout the 48-team competition.

The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “We’re committed is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” organizers added.
