Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
Wilson's response came after Payton made comments after Denver's remarkable 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M extension.
- The team went 4-11 in his debut year before the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
