Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades After Leading Abusive Songs Targeting Coach Wilder
The striker is now a member of the Championship side only seven months after leading derogatory taunts aimed at the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, without a club since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a agreement joining the second-tier strugglers through the winter. His seven-year career with Leeds finished by mutual consent in August.
Among the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player included starting abusive chants regarding Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations in April. Now, the former England player is set to play for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss aims to rescue his beloved club out of the relegation zone.
Previous History Involving the Striker and Wilder
Both men had history before Leeds earned promotion back to the Premier League the previous campaign and United lost the playoff final by Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as a "muppet" back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United won direct promotion while Leeds fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
All appears to have been put behind them with United, the league's lowest scorers, urgently requiring of improvement up front while Bamford looking to revive his career.
The Wilder chant went viral this spring. A repentant Bamford along with Leeds boss, Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Chris Wilder said at the time: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I have no problem whatsoever with it. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow professional! However I appreciated and admired him calling me.
“We had 20 minutes and similarly I talked with Daniel as well and had a half-hour chat together and he's a great person, a class act. Back in my playing days we used to dish it out and accept it and that’s part and parcel of football across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with the situation and I said that to Pat.”
