The NWSL has announced a major new policy created to empower its clubs to compete on the worldwide scene for elite athletes. Named the "High Impact Player Rule," this provision lets teams to surpass the league's wage limit by up to $1 million expressly to lure and retain star players.

The players' association has put forward an counter method: directly raising the team wage ceiling for all clubs to boost international competition. Selection Requirements for "High-Impact" Status

Initiative Mechanics

The $1 million exemption is scheduled to grow year-over-year at the matching percentage as the base salary cap. This extra funding can be assigned to a one player or split among several qualifying players. Furthermore, the salary hit for the designated player(s) must be a minimum of 12% of the base salary cap.
