Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
